HomegrownDefender George Campbell became Atlanta United’s sixth Homegrown signing on July 9, 2019. Campbell was born in Chester, Pennsylvania and joined the Atlanta United Academy during its first season in 2016-17, joining from Georgia United. Despite his age, Campbell spent the majority of the 2019 season with Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship. His professional debut came against Hartford Athletic on March 9, 2019 where he was named Man of the Match. Â
Campbell spent all of 2020 with Atlanta United’s first team and made his MLS debut on March 7, 2020 against FC Cincinnati. In 2021, Campbell made 15 appearances for Atlanta United and played a total of 629 minutes. His first MLS start came on July 17 against New England. Campbell scored his first career MLS goal on September 10 against Orlando City. Â
At the club’s academy, Campbell started 32 games for the U-17s during 2017-18 season, anchoring the team that reached the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) championship in just its second season. The year prior, he appeared in 24 matches and made 11 starts for the U-16s. Â
2021 (Atlanta United): Made a career-high 15 appearances with six starts for Atlanta United. He scored his first career MLS goal against rivals Orlando City on Sept. 10. Totaled 629 minutes during the regular season. Concacaf Champions League: Made one appearance off the bench in the opening CCL match against Alajuelense. Â
2020 (Atlanta United): Made one appearance, his MLS debut, coming on as a substitute and playing 46 minutes against FC Cincinnati on March 7, 2020. Concacaf Champions League: Did not feature.Â
2019 (Atlanta United 2): Made his professional debut on March 9 against Hartford Athletic. Played in 22 USL Championship matches in 2019 making 20 starts. He finished the year among the team leaders in clearances (61), interceptions (31) and blocks (13). He won 71.8 percent of his tackles and completed over 85 percent of his passes. He scored his first professional goal against Indy Eleven on 9/25. Finished the year with two goals after scoring against Bethlehem Steel later in the season. Campbell was also selected and played in the 2019 MLS Homegrown game as part of All-Star Week. Â
2017-18 (Atlanta United Academy): Campbell made33 appearances, 32 starts, and scored three goals across all competitions with the U-17 team. He also made one start with the U-19s.Â
2016-17 (Atlanta United Academy): Campbell made 24 total appearances and 11 starts for the U-16s and scored two goals. Campbell was a member of the U-16 squad which won the 2017 National Championship.
